This page highlights some of my favorite pieces I’ve made in reverse-chronological order with some occasional commentary.

Building off of the 2022 digital pieces blending history, fantasy/sci-fi, and surrealism, I’m now setting the characters in locations and attempting to mimic Maxfield Parrish color palettes.

Procreate & digital photography
Attempting to blend elements of history, fantasy/sci-fi, and surrealism by combining reference images from historical painting and more contemporary portraits in rendering (plus refining to my “ideals.”)

Here I’m trying to more overtly combine historical + contemporary elements and seeing if I can place them in a “physical space” while still maintaining a relatively sparse composition and color palette.

After agonizing over one piece (a somewhat literal recreation of a 16th c portrait with very detailed jewelry) for months in attempting to 1) learn Procreate and 2) work on composition/color palette, I saw a Patrick Nagel piece and wondered if I could make her into a sexy nun. The chain is an edited photo I took of a chain I use to attach my phone to my person.

A new interest in medieval/Early Modern history and dress spurred an interest in practicing painting in the styles of 12th-17th c European portraiture.
I’ve found some comfort in learning about the lives/aspirations/anxieties of people hundreds of years ago and how similarly they mirror our contemporary ones. The entry point here was the parallel of the impact pandemics have had on these time periods and the resultant hysteria (anxieties/resignations about the looming “end of time,” reactionary movements, the ways in which ruling institutions leveraged these disasters to exert control over people).
But I also believe that this artistic style is incredibly under appreciated in that its often viewed as “primitive” (for lack of a better term), where I believe the choices in representation are less about attempting (and failing to accomplish) realism and more about evoking the beliefs and ideals of the time. Also a lot of it is incredibly funny.
